This more industrial side of the region’s history can also be seen at the Slate Mine at Besucherbergwerk Fell. This interesting museum and exhibition is some 20 kilometres from the city centre.

There are a number of museums in the city which explore the area’s heritage. Visiting the Rheinisches Landesmuseum provides one of the best overviews of the Roman period in German history. The Toy Museum of Trier provides fun counterpoint to the more serious venues.

With the Mosel Region the third largest of Germany’s 13 wine producing regions, visitors can also sample the local vintages. This area is famous fro sweet white wines, most of which are only six to nine percent alcohol by volume. Wine production in the region dates back a long way in history.
