Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not
Myths have always shrouded hypnosis and its therapeutic arm, hypnotherapy. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Given below are some common beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. Psychology and the other sciences have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to imbibe and practice. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not exhibiting enough will power to block the effect of their words. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone irrespective of his or her mental strength.
Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is totally aware of his environment. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is therefore able to concentrate fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Some scientists have found that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. Researchers have hit upon this low result because they have used the identical hypnosis procedure on all people without considering their individual traits. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a viable solution as different people fall under different personality types, and hence are responsive to different techniques.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got no involvement of communication, on the other hand communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not true. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.
Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural changes in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in unnatural ways. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a good amount of of inspiration in an individual.
Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and hence one must not pay heed to the myths, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
